Texas Senator and Tea Party favorite Ted Cruz laid into President Obama’s job performance on Friday at a conservative conference in Texas. Calling Obama and his administration “lawless,” the tough-talking senator clearly highlighted Obama’s cavalier attitude when it comes to enforcing laws.
CBS Houston reported,
The conservative Republican laid out his reasoning for why he thinks the president is “dangerous and terrifying.”
According to the Statesman, Cruz also slammed Obama for what he referred to as a pattern of “lawlessness on a breathtaking scale.”
“We are a nation of laws and not men,” Cruz was additionally quoted as saying by the website. “If we had a system where a president can pick and choose what laws to follow at utter whim … that is seriously dangerous.”
The public policy conference at which he spoke was sponsored by the conservative Texas Public Policy Foundation. Minutes before his address, the organization posted a photograph of Cruz on their official Facebook page.
His address comes just one day after he released a statement on his official website that took aim at Obama’s “promise zone.”
“It’s altogether fitting that President Obama is … talking about income inequality because income inequality has increased dramatically as a direct result of his economic policies,” the statement reads. “Unfortunately, rather than stop Washington’s job-killing policies, President Obama proposes yet more government spending and debt.”
It concludes, “All of America needs to be a real ‘Promise Zone’ – with reduced barriers to small businesses creating private-sector jobs – and we should start by repealing every word of Obamacare, building the Keystone pipeline, abolishing the IRS, and rolling back abusive regulations.”
Sen. Cruz also blasted the president for his promise that Americans could keep their healthcare plans under Obamacare. “There is a level at which all of this is ludicrous, but there is also a level at which all of this is dangerous and terrifying,” he said.
President Obama has routinely disregarded his primary function as the chief executive of this nation: enforcing laws. In our republic, lawmakers create laws and the executive executes those laws. However, while recent presidents have remained malleable on the borders of their job descriptions, the president has ruled autonomously by enforcing edicts contrived within the executive branch.
Despite running contrary to the immigration policies on the books, the president announced in 2012 that he was suspending the enforcement of immigration laws by placing a hold on deportations and having the executive branch review deportations on a case-by-case basis.
The president has also instituted dozens of executive orders centered on gun control and has pointed to Congress’ unwillingness to pass new gun control measures as supposed justification for interceding.
Obama’s ironically-named Justice Department has also operated with complete disregard for our laws. From condoning voter intimidation by refusing to prosecute Black Panthers who physically threatened voters in 2008 to refusing to defend the federal government’s Defense of Marriage Act to the Supreme Court, the Obama Justice Department, a department that is supposed to enforce laws is, perhaps, the most lawless bunch in the entire Obama Administration.
Further, Obama has continually claimed that Obamacare is the settled law of the land, but has made unilateral changes to it countless times by delaying requirements and choosing which parts of the law he will enforce.
The president operates on a fundamental premise of lawlessness that is most commonly associated with 18th century French monarchs. Picking and choosing what will be the rules by which his subjects will live, Obama has illustrated the dangers of an amalgamated government where the lines that separate the branches of government continue to be eroded into meaninglessness.
