Indie Labels Now Control 34.6% Of U.S. Market

According to Billboard Magazine, 2013 year end SoundScan statistics reveal that independent labels grabbed 34.6% U.S. of the overall recorded music market share based on master ownership (not distribution). This is a 2% jump over last year’s 32.6% tally. Once again, Independent labels stake claim to more sales than any of the majors, outpacing each of the major label groups to snag the #1 sales sector spot followed by Universal, Sony and Warner Music.

Record sales chartThis growing Indie share is a sure sign that the diversity, creativity and resilience of Independent Labels are leading to significantly increased revenues.  Some of the top selling albums in 3013 included Mumford & Sons (Glassnote), Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Taylor Swift (Big Machine), The Lumineers (Dualtone), Vampire Weekend (Beggars Group) & Five Finger Death Punch (Prospect Park). On the singles charts many of these performed strongly, plus AWOLNATION’s “Sail” (Red Bull) continued to set records.
